Although we don’t often hear of people buying Boeing 727 aircraft, Bruce did just that in 1999. He bought it from Athens-based Olympic Airways for a whopping $100,000. This techie was eager to get his new toy, but first, he had to finish transporting the plane to the Oregon forest. Getting the plane to Oregon was the hardest hurdle. To take the plane to that desolate land that Campbell called home cost him another $120,000, and the $220,000 plane still needed a facelift.

He knew he wanted to improve the livability of the plane, given his strong belief that the plane could be an incredible home instead of being wasted and “mindlessly scrapped” Campbell worked on the body for years while living in freight vans. When the vans were overrun by rats,  he had to reside on the plane without a building permit. It was at this time that he really began to understand the space he was working on.
