William Foster Hayes was born in Harvey, Illinois, on June 5, 1925. After becoming a navy airman, he studied at DePauw University and received his master’s degree at Northwestern University. Hayes started as a performer on Your Show of Shows and then starred in Me and Juliet’s Broadway musical. In 1955, his song The Ballad of Davy Crockett reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, catapulting him to fame as an American singer.

He went on to seek a career as an actor, landing roles in a variety of series. He received two Emmy nominations for his role on Days of our Lives in 1965. He married Susan Seaforth Hayes, his Days of our Lives co-star, in 1974. Despite their 18-year age difference, the on-screen pair is nonetheless blissfully married today. This year marks Hayes’ 96th birthday.

His film Savannah Smiles, which he created and produced, also grossed more than $10 million worldwide. A Walk in the Clouds, a 1995 romantic drama, was co-written by his second wife, actress Barbara Stanger. Reviewers report that his net worth is $25 million. Currently, the actor is 96 years old and still works as a screenplay writer. Meanwhile, two of his daughters, Marisa and Penelope Ann, became actors as well.
